Meet the friends

The heroes of this story.

Young Juha

Young Juha

boy — the wise fool

Counts nine donkeys while sitting on the tenth. Counts wrong every time he climbs back on — and laughs until tears run.

His donkey

His donkey

donkey — Juha's own

Long-suffering, expressive ears; sits down in the road and knows the answer all along. Never speaks.

The Roc

The Roc

the biggest bird in all the stories

Sails overhead, wider than a house. Juha — the only one who looks up instead of running — promises to count its feathers someday.

Juha's mother

Juha's mother

Juha's mother

Counts at the gate: ten donkeys, one Juha.

The story

Juha's uncle gives him ten donkeys to bring home, and Juha counts nine — because he's sitting on the tenth. Down: ten. Up: nine. Down: ten. Up: nine. It works every single time, until a neighbor laughs the kind laugh and shows him. That evening Juha tells the story wrong on purpose, and draws the day's lesson in the dust for his mother to find.

What little minds learn

  • Counting to ten — in Darija (Arabic), with the child counting along
  • Wisdom in foolishness: the wise fool sees what the wise miss
  • Laughing with vs. laughing at — the neighbor's kind laugh
  • Storytellers retell and improve: Juha tells it wrong on purpose
