Spain · Asturias · an Asturian mountain village, Spain (from Madrid)
The heroes of this story.

A Madrid girl who packs her books, her questions, and her grandmother's red scarf. Makes three promises she keeps. ⚠ IP FLAG: name pending lawyer clearance — manuscript uses it as a placeholder.

Cat-sized, iridescent teal-green scales, wings like wet leaves, brow-stone on its forehead. Sneezes a golden spark that lights the lantern. Has no personal name yet (ASK-RICARDO); never speaks.

Asturias's trickster — steals the scarf, then bows till his nose touches dust and ties a knot in the air, and keeps it. Never speaks; pantomime only.

Knitted the red scarf; accepts the hatchling with warm milk and her oldest blanket.
Celia follows a trail of iridescent scales into a cave and finds a baby cuélebre egg; when a silent goblin steals her red scarf, she laughs instead of crying and invites him to visit. She makes the hatchling a nest of red wool and ties three promises into her scarf — warmth, secrecy, and never using it to be unkind. The little one's first golden spark lights the lantern, and the village learns the story of the cuélebre who gave its brow-stone away.
