Mexico friend-cast · Nahuatl track · Xochitl's grandmother's courtyard garden, Mexico
The heroes of this story.

"Say it wrong first. Every word was wrong in somebody's mouth once." Laughs with Cata, never at her. Her name means flower.

Her tongue feels twisty already; it comes out sideways — neel-tzeh! Counts ce, ome, yei all the way home.

Lifts his head and waits — dogs are very good at waiting — thumping his tail on every number. CANON: alebrije, not xolo (2026-10-10).

Grows flowers the way she grows words — one at a time, every morning. Says it once, slowly, like pouring water. Tucks a marigold behind Xochitl's ear.
Xochitl's grandmother grows words like flowers, and today Cata will say hello to her — in Nahuatl. Cata says it wrong first, the way every word was wrong in somebody's mouth once, and Grandmother pours it like water: niltze. Then the seeds: ce, ome, yei, nahui, macuilli — five seeds, five words. A word is a seed; you plant it by saying it. That night the seeds are listening; in the morning — green! "Tlazocamati," Xochitl tells them. Thank you.
