Iraq · Mesopotamia · Kish, the old city between the rivers (Mesopotamia)
The heroes of this story.

Knows every sheep by name. Splints the eagle's wing with river reeds, runs alongside through winter, and is scared of the height — brave on the second try.

Trapped in a pit, one wing folded wrong. Lowers one shoulder after seven months of care; banks gentle as water when the shaking hands come. Kindness comes back with wings. Never speaks.

Enormous, calm, chewing slowly — the way the patient watch the patient. Keeps time with a warm low; raises her head to see them off.
Little Etana finds an eagle trapped in a pit with a folded wing, and the old shepherds say: seven months — wings take seven months. Through autumn, winter, and spring he carries, feeds, and runs alongside it, until the eagle lowers one shoulder and the ground lets go. Too high, too cold — Etana asks to return, and the eagle banks gentle as water. That night he presses a promise into wet clay: in his land, writing was invented, and words can last five thousand years. At dawn he shows the eagle the tablet and points up — and this time looks at the horizon, not down. Courage is the second try.
