Mexico friend-cast · music track · Neli's courtyard, Mexico
The heroes of this story.

Hums while she works. Learns Mexico's goodbye song — palmas first, then the rooftop arrullo — and sings it every evening until it becomes a welcome song.

Her hands stumble on the palmas; she joins in loud and wrong and joyful. Neli doesn't fix a single note — some singers sing like a flag.

Cata's dog; his tail keeps the true beat. CANON: alebrije, not xolo (2026-10-10).

Hums Mexico's goodbye song with the old radio; conducts the whole street with a wooden spoon.

Left with the season; returns to a trill when Neli sings the chorus at the sky. "Vuelve." — you came back. (Likely Book 1's Viento; manuscript doesn't confirm.)
Neli's courtyard has one empty nest — Viento left with the season — so she learns Mexico's goodbye song from Abuela's old radio: palmas, then the rooftop arrullo, sung every evening like a lullaby that does a job. One spring evening a forked tail appears over the roof, and Neli sings the chorus straight at the sky — the little swallow answers with a trill. The goodbye had a door in it after all; the goodbye song has become a welcome song. That is what songs do — they change jobs.
